High Thread Count Bed Sheets - Why More is Better
You may see the term 'thread count' all the time when shopping for bed sheets, but what exactly does it mean? While you may think it is just a number that is just thrown out there to make a sheet look better, it is actually a number that is used to measure a specific factor. Thread count, in its simplest form, is really just a measure of how many treads are woven together in one square inch of fabric. This is done by counting both the lengthwise threads and the widthwise threads, also known as warp and weft respectively.

As a general rule, the higher the thread count per square inch, the more luxurious and soft the sheets will end up being. While this is almost always the case, there are other certain factors that determine this as well. One such factor will be the ply, which is a measure of how thick a single thread is. The thicker the tread is, the less you will be able to fit into that one square inch and thus the rougher the sheets will end up.
Many high dollar sheets, such as Egyptian sheets, will have very high thread counts. This is because the ply of the tread used will be extremely thin. So, the thinner the ply, the more threads that can be used in one square inch and thus the softer the sheets end up. Anyone who has spent a night on Egyptian sheets can certainly attest to this.
Of course, the way in which the fabric itself is treated will have a great deal to do with how soft the sheets end up being. As a rule of thumb, those who are seeking luxury and comfort will typically look for thread count in excess of 200 with 400 or more being ideal. There are even some available on the market today that boast upwards of 1,000 thread count bed sheets and higher.
Along with being softer and more enjoyable to sleep on, sheets with a higher thread count will generally last longer too. It is not unusual of a higher quality sheet with a thread count of 400 or more to last longer than three sets of sheets with a low 200 thread count. So, while the cost may be greater in the beginning, over time the softer sheets may in fact pay off in more ways than one.
So, the next time you are out and about and looking for new sheets, remember to consider the thread count. By selecting sheets that have a 400 thread count and better, you can ensure yourself a great night sleep and ensure yourself that you are getting high quality sheets as well. As with many other things in life, when it comes to sheets, you will get what you pay for, which is indicative of thread count.
